- New models like GPT-4.1 Nano, GPT-4.1 Mini, GPT-4.1, GPT-Image-1, Grok 3 Mini and Grok 3 are released.
- Monthly credit is increased from 1,000,000 to 1,500,000 for both staff and students.

- DeepSeek-R1, DeepSeek-V3 and o3-mini are released for staff and students.
- No VPN is needed to access the ChatGPT platform.
- The new and more cost-efficient GPT-4o mini is released in replacement of ChatGPT (GPT-3.5). It supports longer outputs and image processing capabilities.

- GPT-4 is upgraded to GPT-4o, which supports the input of text and up to four images in a single prompt.

- Newer models have been implemented, and GPT-4 now supports 128k context input, while ChatGPT (GPT-3.5) supports 16k context input.
EdUHK has adopted a chatbot-based large language model (LLM), using Microsoft Azure AI Services, that generates text or images in dialogue format so as to facilitate the University community to embrace the technology. Hosted on campus, the service provides similar functionality to OpenAI’s ChatGPT. According to Microsoft, unlike other AI tools such as OpenAI, we do not record your conversation history for any future AI model training.
Available AI Models & Features
We provide access to a wide range of advanced models to suit different needs:

- GPT-4.1 Series: Standard GPT-4.1, Nano, and Mini
- Image Generation: GPT-Image-1.5 and GPT-Image-1 Mini
- DeepSeek Series: DeepSeek V4 Flash and DeepSeek V4 Pro
- Grok Series: Grok 4.3
- Google Gemini Series: Gemini 3 Flash and Gemini 3 Flash Lite
- Document Upload: Supported models allow for the upload and analysis of files in .docx, .pdf, .txt, .md, .xlsx and .pptx that are below 10 MB
- Model switch in conversations: Allows for switching between different AI models within a single conversation.
- Reasoning effort option: Allows users to adjust the depth of processing; selecting a higher reasoning level provides more thorough analysis for complex tasks, but results in higher credit consumption.
Users can access and experience these AI models at genai.eduhk.hk/ (EdUHK system, opens in new tab) with their network account and password. Each user is given a monthly credit of 1,500,000 units to use the chatbot service.
Note: Since our service is based on Microsoft Azure AI Services, the provision of our service may be subject to changes in Microsoft’s technology, policies, and terms of service. We will make every effort to inform you of any changes that may arise.
Self-service Credit Top-up Function for Students
Students can conveniently purchase additional credits through the Online Payment Portal (OPP) and the credits are instantly added to the purchased credit balance upon completion of the transaction. They can purchase up to 3,000,000 credits per transaction. The system will automatically use the monthly free credits first before deducting from the purchased credits. While these credits have no expiration date, they are non-transferable and non-refundable. Students should not purchase more than needed. To purchase additional credits, log into the EdUHK GenAI platform and click “Top up” in the menu bar. To check your top-up history, please see “My Orders” on OPP.
Data Retention
Colleagues may delete their conversation history at their own discretion at any time while students’ conversation history is kept on the University server for record purposes, e.g. for course instructor’s review if necessary.
However, to ensure system efficiency and maintain data privacy, please note that all conversations that have been inactive for 6 months will be automatically and permanently deleted from the servers. Users should regularly export or save important conversations they wish to keep. Please read and accept the terms and conditions of using the EdUHK GenAI service.
Please note that other generative AI tools such as POE (https://poe.com/ (external site, opens in new tab)) from Quora and Copilot (copilot.microsoft.com/ (external site, opens in new tab)) from Microsoft are hosted by external parties. Colleagues are therefore advised to avoid disclosing confidential, sensitive or personal information, especially if you are not sure how the data is kept or used. As a general principle, please opt for our service, if confidential, sensitive or personal data is to be used. Again, it is best to remove or mask sensitive data before using any AI tools.
Terminology
There are some new terms used and below are a few to help you get started.
- Prompts / Queries - Your text input to get what you want it to do.
- Completions / Responses - The return for your prompt / query.
- Credit Units - The lengths and consumptions of the prompt / query and completion / response are calculated in terms of tokens by Microsoft Azure AI Services. Tokens can be words or just chunks of characters. (Please see learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/cognitive-services/openaioverview#tokens (external site, opens in new tab) for more details.) The amount of tokens consumed is more than just counting the words in your current prompt because it also needs to consider your previous conversations.
- There are a few models available now. Users should choose the model to use according to individual needs.

Other Generative AI Tools
There are other generative AI tools on the market. Colleagues are advised to avoid disclosing confidential, sensitive or personal information in the prompt / query when using these tools.
Please observe the 6-P pedagogical approach promulgated by the University earlier (www.lttc.eduhk.hk/papers/6p.pdf (PDF file)), which promotes the productive use of AI-enabled text-generating tools for the development of critical and/or reflective thinking by students.
EdUHK GenAI API
EdUHK GenAI Application Programming Interface (API), which includes GPT-4.1 Nano, GPT-4.1 Mini, GPT-4.1, GPT-5.3, GPT-5.4 Nano, GPT-5.4 Mini, GPT-5.4, Grok 3 Mini, Grok 3, DeepSeek-V3 and DeepSeek-R1, is now available. Upon application, departments or projects can adopt our GenAI services to build chatbots or virtual assistants on their system/application, and more. The service is provided on a credit-based mechanism, and user departments or projects will be charged for credit consumption. Interested parties, please complete and return the EdUHK GenAI API Application Form (F046) (PDF file).
